At the international conference on “Education and Reproduction in Low-Fertility Settings” of the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) from 2-4 December 2015, Dr. Martin Bujard presented new insights on the correlation of education and childlessness.
While looking for explanatory approaches for childlessness, the educational level as a factor increasingly became the focus of interest of international demographic research in recent years. Correspondingly, earlier studies came to the result that an increase in the educational level of women also means an increase in the group of those who are childless. In this respect, 100 European demographers discussed the recent research situation in the light of new results. The discussion revolved around the situation in particular countries as well as in sub-national regions with a low fertility level.
In this context, Dr. Martin Bujard showed in his presentation that – based on new analyses of the micro censuses of 2002 to 2014 – there will be a change in the trends of childlessness among highly educated women. Recent data hint at the fact that there will also be an increasing number of childless women who have a medium and low educational level. In the context of group-specific trend analyses, he discussed the meaning of educational level as a significant factor for childlessness in general. However, Dr. Bujard emphasized that assessing these fundamental changes of the relation between education and fertility more precisely would require further studies.
