New Book | 18.12.2017Managing Expatriates: Success Factors in Private and Public Domains

The latest volume of the Series on Population Studies published by the BiB provides in-depth examinations of a variety of individual, social, and environmental factors that contribute to the success of expatriate employees. Using data from numerous large-scale studies from both the public and private sectors, this volume provides valuable insights into expatriate success with implications for both theoretical understanding and practical management.

In the last decades, the mobility demands placed on the general workforce have become greater and more important. This is true in particular for expatriate employees travelling around the globe whose number has increased significantly.

The volume explores factors that influence employees to pursue expatriation, contribute to expatriate adjustment and satisfaction, and ultimately drive expatriate performance, well-being, and success. The chapters in this book consider the role of sociodemographic characteristics, personality and individual differences, training and preparation, and social and organizational support in contributing to each of these outcomes. Using findings from diverse countries and sectors and data-focused analytic techniques, this volume provides novel insights into factors promoting expatriate success.

For scientists and students with an interest in international mobility, the current volume offers important insights into the determinants of expatriate success. The book is also relevant for organizations in the public and private sectors that regularly work with expatriates and are concerned with aligning their operations with evidence-based best practices.

On the occasion of a joint event of the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), the Federal Foreign Office and cooperating partners of the International Generalizability of Expatriate Success Factors (iGOES) project, selected findings of the edited volume were presented in Berlin on 15 December 2017. In addition, the results were discussed with colleagues of the Federal Foreign Office and other experts from sending organizations.

The main focus was on the following issues: Which preparatory and supporting measures increase the prospects of success of an assignment abroad? What role do age, experience, gender and marital status play for a successful stay abroad? After the opening of the event by Prof. Dr. Norbert F. Schneider, director of the BiB, authors of the collection including Dr. Heiko Rüger and Stine Waibel from the BiB presented their research findings.
