Federal Institute for Population Research

A Change in the Institute's Management • 01.10.2021Prof. Dr. C. Katharina Spieß is the New Director of the BiB

BiB has a new director: Prof. Dr. C. Katharina Spieß has succeeded Prof. Dr. Norbert F. Schneider, who has recently retired. The economist previously led the Department of Education and Family at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin. She researched and was a professor of education and family economics at the Freie Universität Berlin. With her move to the BiB in Wiesbaden, she will teach at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in the future as Professor of Population Economics.

At BiB, Prof. Dr. Spieß will contribute experience from many years in application-oriented research and its transfer to society. Her goal is to further expand the scientific orientation of the institute through stronger national and international scientific networking and to combine this with research-based policy advice. This is important in order to be able to provide answers to the many central questions of the future that are reflected in BiB's diverse research projects.

As an institute for "population research", BiB covers many areas with its topics, such as family, migration and aging and does not see itself as a pure demographic research institute. The projects and research approaches at the institute cover a broad field of social science, which in an international context can be summarised under the term "Population Studies". The new director sees BiB's central task as conducting empirical population research at a high scientific level and passing on the findings to politicians and the public in a way that is appropriate for the target group.

More Information and Details about the transfer of office can be found in the upcoming issue of „Bevölkerungsforschung Aktuell“.
