The book deals with mobility skills in the foreign service, risks and protective factors at coping with rotation abroad. Using the sample of employees of the German Foreign Office and their families during rotation, the study shows which requirements and consequences intense international job-related mobility can have on relationship, family and health.

Thereby, possible chances and risks are in the focus. The aim of the analysis is to determine potential stresses (risk factors) for the employees and their families as well as to identify protective factors which preserve the employees and their families from negative consequences.

Beyond that, measures and recommendations to reduce mobility-related stresses and to support or improve mobility skills of the employees and their relatives are presented on the basis of the results of the study. Overall, chances and positive aspects of life during rotation (e.g. variety and diversity) became apparent for the employees, their partners and their children. For most of the respondents mobility was connected with pleasure. However, some of the respondents, partners and children were critical on certain aspects. In addition, under certain circumstances, the rotational process can have negative consequences on the health-related quality of life, the reconciliation of work and family life as well as on the satisfaction with the relationship.
