Generations and Gender Programme
Content and Objectives
The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) is a social science infrastructure programme for providing international data on family and demography. At the heart of the programme is the self-conducted Generation and Gender Survey (GGS), a panel study conducted in about 20 countries so far. The focus of the GGP is on the relationship between children and their parents (‘generations’) and the relationship between partners (‘gender’). The Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) is a partner in the GGP and responsible for the GGS in Germany.
The first GGS in Germany was conducted in 2005 on behalf of the BiB by TNS Infratest Sozialforschung. A second survey was held in 2006 among the Turkish population living in Germany. In the years 2008/2009 and 2009/2010, the second waves of both the core survey and the survey of the Turkish population living in Germany were conducted. From 2020 onwards, new GGS waves will be conducted with a newly drawn sample. In preparation for this, the BiB is currently conducting a methodical pilot study.
The GGS data of the first and second waves are provided for scientific purposes by the Population Activity Unit. Information, user registration and the possibility for online analyses can be found at www.ggp-i.org.
Data and Methods
Up to now, four GGS surveys have been conducted:

The coordination of the GGP is run by the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in Den Haag, Netherlands.
The BiB and several other research institutes have been involved in the conceptional development of the GGP. These institutions make up the GGP Consortium.
The responsibility for conducting the respective national GGS is that of the participating countries' partner institutes. These institutes that conduct the GGS surveys are organised in the GGP Council of Partners.
