Large Families and the Two-Child Norm
Content and Objectives
BiB findings show that the decline in the birth rate in Germany over the past few decades is primarily due to the fact that young adults today are less likely to have three or more children. Based on this, the project examines the causes and consequences of the decline in large families at a societal level as well as the individual motivations and personal consequences for women and men for having or not having a third child. The decision-making processes, the timing of birth order, and other direct influencing factors such as contraceptive behaviour are also of interest. The project Large Families and the Two-Child Norm taps into the findings of the Childlessness and the Large Families research projects.
The analyses are based on official data (census, microcensus) and the large-scale pairfam, SOEP, and GGP panels. The BiB’s own FReDA and Familienleitbilder (FLB) – Concepts of Family in Germany studies are also used.
