Research Area: Migration and Mobility

The increase in intercontinental migration flows, the departure of young people from rural areas and the growing complexity of individual migration patterns as a result of globalisation pose major challenges – but also opportunities – for society, policy-makers and research. The Research Area is concerned with international migration, internal migration within Germany and spatial (commuter) mobility between places of education, work and residence. The research focuses on three aspects: first, the analysis of causes and motives for migration, secondly, its consequences for individuals, their families and regional population development, and third, the quantification, modelling and visualisation of migration and commuter flows.

Current Research Projects

Research Group: International Migration

The focal point of the research group is on the study of international migration and how it influences demographic and social structures. The group analyses the motives for decisions to migrate internationally as well as the personal and social consequences of migration, such as securing skilled workers or participating in the labour market.
