Research Area: Migration and Mobility

The migration and mobility behaviours of the population have both direct and indirect impacts on demographic change. International migration has a direct influence on demographic and social structures. Since the middle of the twentieth century, Europe has developed into one of the most important immigration regions of the world. Germany is a chief ‘immigration magnet’.

Migration and mobility have indirect influences on demographic change, by contrast, when these processes have consequences for family development, quality of life or health and when the geographic distribution of the population is considered. Two research groups focus on the developmental contexts that explain migration and mobility processes.

The focal point of the research group is on the study of international migration and its influence on demographic and social structures.
