Research at the BiB

Demographic transition is one of the major challenges for policy-makers, administrations, industry, regional and local governments as well as every individual in our society.

The population in Germany is getting older, is shrinking and becoming more heterogeneous. These developments are triggered by a persistently low birth rate, steadily rising life expectancy, extensive migration movements and the increasing diversity of lifestyles. In the process, the regional differences in population development are also increasing.

Researching the causes and consequences of demographic developments in Germany is the central scientific mission of the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB). Research activities are theory-based, of high quality and methodologically sound, aiming at providing evidence-based policy advice. Academic research at the institute is independent and beyond party politics. Within the framework of the basic research, the BiB also carries out its own surveys.
