In 2012 and 2016 TNS Infratest carried out a survey regarding „Familienleitbilder in Deutschland” ["Family role models in Germany"] which was asked by the Federal Institution for Population Research.
Objects of Inquiry are cultural role models regarding families such as subjectively and collectively shared notions about a “normal family”, a “good partnership”, the “right age” for getting married, the “ideal number of children” and an “ideal parenthood”.

The aim of this study is to analyse how these cultural influences and normative notions shape the fertility behavior, partnerships, notions about the role of a mother or a father and other phenomena of family life. A longitudinal study shall show how stable these role models are and by what factors they can be changed. Furthermore it is to be clarified how they influence fertility behavior, different forms of families and their development.
